If you’ve ever asked yourself, "Are any of these old records actually worth money?"—you’re not alone. As longtime Milwaukee record buyers, we’ve seen thousands of collections, from dusty polka LPs to rare soul 45s worth hundreds. This guide will help you figure out which records to keep, which ones to sell, and how to tell the difference.
Why Some Records Are Valuable (and Most Are Not)
Contrary to what you might think, age doesn’t equal value. The most valuable records are ones with a mix of the following traits:
High demand (Popular with collectors, DJs, or fans)
Low supply (Pressed in small quantities or never reissued)
Strong condition (Vinyl and cover both clean and intact)
Right genre (More on that below)
Vinyl Genres That Tend to Hold the Most Value
Here’s what we pay the most for at our Milwaukee shop:
Soul, Funk & R&B 45s – Especially rare Milwaukee or Midwest pressings
Jazz LPs – Classic Blue Note, Prestige, and private label titles
Punk & Indie Rock – Local, self-released, or early Sub Pop-style records
Classic Rock – Clean copies of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Hendrix
Hip-Hop & Rap – 80s–90s albums and 12" singles, especially Midwest acts
Reggae, World, Latin – Scarce pressings, original issues
Genres that usually don’t carry value:
Easy listening / crooners
Classical (except sealed box sets or early audiophile pressings)
Big band / swing
Christmas and children’s records
Local Pressings = Hidden Gold
We specialize in Midwest and Milwaukee-area private press records, often made in runs of 200–500 copies. Gospel 45s, obscure soul, garage rock, and even weird bar bands can be valuable if they weren’t widely distributed. We’ve paid $50–$500+ for certain Milwaukee titles others would’ve tossed.
What About Condition?
Condition matters—a lot.
Mint/Near Mint copies fetch top dollar.
Scratched or water-damaged records often aren’t resellable.
Original sleeves, inserts, and hype stickers add value.
Pro tip: If you’re unsure, don’t clean your records aggressively—we’ve seen well-meaning cleaning ruin records.
Quick Value Clues
Correct Matrix numbers in the dead wax can signal a first pressing
Colored vinyl, misprints, or promo-only versions may increase value
Still sealed? Don’t open it—it might be worth more as-is

Look for indicators like limited pressings, high demand (popular among collectors or DJs), original labels or sleeves, and near mint condition. First pressings and private pressings are especially worth checking.
-
No. Age alone doesn’t determine value—many older records (like easy listening or classical) were mass-produced and have little resale demand. Scarcity and genre matter more than age.
-
Clean condition classic rock, soul 45s, punk LPs, jazz, hip-hop, and rare indie or private pressings from the 60s–90s are frequently in demand. Clean copies from artists like Coltrane, the Stooges, or local Midwest acts can be worth hundreds.
-
Absolutely. Scratches, seam splits, and water damage can significantly reduce or eliminate a record’s resale value. Collectors are picky—mint or near mint condition is key to fetch high value.
